D&M Home Inspections

Have you been busy watering the lawn and garden? If you have a private well for your water, it uses a pump.

This is a shallow well pump, located near the floor with the gauge on it, and the tall blue object is the well holding, or water bladder tank. Water and pressurized air are stored in this tank.
When you turn on the faucet, pressurized air pushes water from the tank to the faucet. When the water gets low, the pump turns on and refills the tank. Sometimes the pump is in the well and sometimes it’s in the house.

This photo shows a two pipe shallow well system. One pipe forces water into the well and helps to push water from the well into the holding tank. This type is used when the water has to be moved a small vertical distance, usually no greater than 25’.

Most well pumps have a life expectancy of 10-15 years before needing replacement.
