D&M Home Inspections

Gutters are designed to collect water from your roof, and with the help of drainpipes, move it away from your foundation. You can also collect water for gardening and other uses. Gutters can be made of aluminum, steel, copper, wood, plastic, tile, and a variety of other materials.

The biggest issue with gutters and drainpipes is lack of maintenance. Because gutters usually require ladders and special tools, as your home inspector, I would recommend a professional for repairs. Simple close to the ground things like drain pipe extensions can be handled by a homeowner.

I typically do my gardening in the yard, not in the gutter as seen in this photo. Gutters are essential at collecting and directing water away from the house and should be maintained regularly.
